The Westland Affair
27th October 2016

The Westland Affair in the mid-1980ís was the biggest crisis to affect
the Yeovil helicopter manufacturer in its 100 year history.

It led to the resignations of two Cabinet Ministers and faced Prime
Minister Margaret Thatcher with the gravest crisis of her career.

Hundreds of jobs in Yeovil were put at risk and the very survival
of the Westland factory was threatened.

In an exclusive interview for our Oral History of Westland, the Defence
Secretary at the time, Lord Michael Heseltine, explains his role in the
crisis and blames "shady deals" and "dirty tricks" in the corridors of
Whitehall for what happened.

Martock Jazz Picnic

 June 2016

We were delighted to be invited to the annual Martock Jazz Picnic
in aid of All Saints Church, where a crowd of over three hundred
guests enjoyed a couple of fantastic sets from Bertie's Big Band.

On arrival and during the interval, visitors were treated to the
beautiful voice of Soprano, Harriet Mulchrone from London.

Our intrepid reporter, aka Steve Haigh, managed to snatch
an interview with Harriet between performances and this is
available on our Latest Programmes 2016 page.

Radio Ninesprings provided the PA for Harriet and this was the
first outing for our new system, operating very temporarily
from the back of our Technical Director's car!

Does anyone notice a passing resemblance between our Project Manager,
Steve, pictured below raising the Radio Ninesprings' banner and
Bill Nighy in "The Boat That Rocked"?

Somerset Dialect Project

 May 2016

How be on?

It be a bit dimpsy, bain't it?

Gi's a gurt big pint of thee best zider!

Did you understand those words?

If so, then the chances are you're fluent in the Somerset dialect and could help
PhD student, Vicky Garnett, with her studies.

Vicky, a student at Trinity College Dublin, has chosen the Somerset accent to study
for her doctorate.

She is looking for people to record their life stories and use the recordings to analyse
how the Somerset accent has changed over time.

When Vicky visited Yeovil she was met by Yeovil historian Jack Sweet and interviewed
by Radio Ninesprings' Steve Haigh.

If you would like to be interviewed by Vicky then please write with your name and
contact details to: info@radioninesprings.co.uk
